Leopard 1 tank

The first trials began in Vehicle entered service with the Bundeswehr in Production ceased in and it was replaced by the Leopard 2. However the Leopard 1 was a very successful design. Over 4 of these MBTs were built in Germany. Another were license-produced in Italy. Despite its age the Leopard 1 is still in service with a number of export operators. The Leopard 1 has a welded hull and cast turret.

Armor of this tank is relatively thin. Germans estimated that contemporary Soviet T tank could penetrate frontal armor of the Leopard 1 at a range of 1 meters. Newer Soviet T tank could penetrate it at a range of over 3 meters.

Marek Halas. It nevertheless builds up well, with reasonably good fit.

It did win me over during the course of the build. Light weathering only.

On Track For Mar. 20-Apr. 5: Leopard 1

Craig Abrahamson said on November 6, Marek Halas said on November 7, Hi Craig, thanks for the comment. The base was an mdf offcut salvaged from an architectural model, which was then sealed and sprayed with some black enamel.

The grass is that old familiar staple of scenic railway modellers and architecture models with some scatter thrown in for good measure. I guess some more spray fixative is called for. The mud is from the AK range. Rob Pollock said on November 7, Jeff Bailey said on November 7, The Leo I is not only a good looking panzer, but it performed quite well. Germans have usually excelled at making tanks.

Boris Rakic said on November 7, Marek, this is a very nice build — and it shows even old veeeery old kits can be built into something special.

Hall of fame nomination letter

Michel Verschuere said on November 7, Hello Marek. Old kit or not, Tamiya makes good models. The tanks work quite well. The person who told you that the Bundeswehr keeps their tanks as clean as possible was right, although ALL our tanks are kept as clean as possible.

However, some weathering always occurs over time. Out in the field, they ALL get filthy and show wear. One of the most fun to me duties a tanker has is at the washrack. I forgot to mention that the tanks they used then were Leopard A5s, which I think was the last version of the Leo I series.

I would compare the Leo I series tanks as being comparable to the final M60 series, the M60 A3 tanks. The M60 A3 had our first thermal primary sights which was a real improvement.

I think that most of the best tanks in the world have Thermal sight systems. It can be used day or night. The Leopard I was the result of the collaborative project between West Germany, France, and later Italy in to develop a new main battle tank to counter the next-generation Soviet tanks.

Unlike previous tank development, the design teams for the project retained the idea that even the thickest of armor will eventually turn obsolete to new anti-tank rounds. After numerous prototype designing and testing while other companies failed the deadline, Porsche's design was chosen for mass production.

The tank, now known as the Leopard 1entered service in and became one of the most widely used tanks in NATO with the Leopard 2 it's successor, continuing the same trend. Although it clearly lacks armor, its gun has great armor penetration and DPS, even capable of penetrating the frontal hull of the formidable T For King of the Hill, the tank can quickly reach the capturing point but may quickly encounter the enemy team.

It is recommended that in this situation, you perform hit and run tactics while "dancing" your tank. The downsides of this vehicle are quite clear, its armor and reload time.

Its armor is thin all-round, meaning that your tank will be vulnerable to almost all enemy tanks, even low tiers, so do not attempt to frontally engage the enemy.

When in close-quarters-combat, the player should consider choosing their target wisely, as its reload time is not fast enough to respond to sudden engagements. Sign In Don't have an account? Background Story The Leopard I was the result of the collaborative project between West Germany, France, and later Italy in to develop a new main battle tank to counter the next-generation Soviet tanks.

Pros Has one of the highest armor penetration in-game, matching with the Indien Panzer's gun. Gun balances both damage per shot and reload time. Excellent maneuverability. Almost instant acceleration to its top speed. Very high shell velocity. Cons Thin armor, lowering its survivability considerably.

Sharp turns while climbing a hill or an obstacle could flip you over. Trivia GregTame, the creator of Tankery, rumored that the Leopard I has a slight chance of penetrating the frontal hull of the T However, this has not been confirmed yet. Player conducted tests seem to mostly debunk this but considering that GregTame did state specifically it has a slight chance of penetrating it remains to be seen if it is true.Tanks portal. The Leopard or Leopard 1 is a main battle tank designed and produced by Porsche in West Germany that first entered service in Developed in an era when HEAT warheads were thought to make conventional heavy armour of limited value, the Leopard focused on firepower in the form of the German-built version of the British L7 mm gun, and improved cross-country performance that was unmatched by other designs of the era.

The design started as a collaborative project during the s between West Germany and Franceand later joined by Italy[1] but the partnership ended shortly after and the final design was ordered by the Bundeswehrwith full-scale production starting in In total, 6, Leopard tanks have been built, of which 4, were battle tanks and 1, were utility and anti-aircraft variants, not including 80 prototypes and pre-series vehicles.

The Leopard quickly became a standard of European forces, and eventually served as the main battle tank in over a dozen countries worldwide, with West Germany, Italy and the Netherlands being the largest operators until their retirement.

Sincethe Leopard 1 has gradually been relegated to secondary roles in most armies. In the German Armythe Leopard 1 was completely phased out in by the Leopard 2while Leopard 1-based vehicles are still widely used in utility roles.

The Leopard 2 has replaced the Leopard 1 in service with many other nations as well, with derived vehicles using the Leopard 1 hull still seeing service.

Currently, the largest operators are Greecewith vehicles, Turkeywith vehicles and Brazil with vehicles. Most of these vehicles have been upgraded with various improvements to armour, firepower and sensors to maintain their ability to engage modern threats. The Leopard project started in November in order to develop a modern tank, the Standard-Panzerto replace the Bundeswehr's American-built M47 and M48 Patton tanks, which, though just delivered to West Germany's recently reconstituted army, were rapidly becoming outdated.

Mobility had priority, while firepower came second; armour was seen as less essential, as it was believed that no real protection against hollow charge weapons was possible anyway. France was very interested in the design as its own AMX 50 project had just failed. Three German Arbeitsgruppe A, B and C and one French design team would be included in a competition, with each team producing two prototypes.

In SeptemberItaly joined the development program. Several prototypes were entered for testing in Among the prototypes were Porsche 's Model from team A, sporting a cast turret, and that of team B Rheinmetallwhose cast turret was somewhat higher. Team C from Borgwarddesigning a very futuristic tank, failed to have a prototype ready in time.

Even before these first prototypes were finished, it had in been decided that a second phase with improved designs would be started: Team A had to build 26 phase II prototypes for testing, team B six. Only two tanks of the required six would actually be constructed by team B.

The Porsche Prototype II was eventually selected as the winner of the contest in ; this did not come as a surprise: it had already been decided in to build a pre-series of 50 vehicles based on this design; production of these was started that very year. This "0-series" was modified with a new cast turret and several hull changes to raise the rear deck to provide more room in the engine compartment and move some of the radiators to the upper sides of the hull.

Before mass production of the standard version started, it was also decided to add an optical range-finding system for better long-range gunnery, which required the turret to be somewhat taller, and added "bumps" on either side of the turret to mount the optics for triangulation. Germany dropped France from the joint program after France repeatedly missed deadlines for its contribution to the program.Once DND and the CAF has declared equipment surplus, a disposal plan is written that describes the preparatory steps that are to be performed, and describes the strategies for its removal from the DND system of record.

They will remain in place until a disposal mechanism is selected. Any revenue generating option for the government is encouraged. The tanks were listed for sale since 31 Aug While there is some interest currently, there are no firm buyers.

The sale is open to approved foreign nations or approved Canadian industry. If tanks cannot be sold, alternative applications will be sought that may bring value to the government. This website uses cookies to personalize your content including adsand allows us to analyze our traffic.

Apart from that, the characteristic feature of this tank is the extraordinary range of vision, and good angle of vertical movement for the cannon, which allows it to conduct fire from behind elevations.

The flaws? Just like in the predecessor,: the armor that cannot protect you even from the fire of light tanks and high susceptibility to module damage.

Apart from that, the tank is perfect as a scout and the squad sniper. Playing with the Leopard 1 requires of the player perfect knowledge of the map and of enemy vehicles - unfortunately, this vehicle is not forbearing. Optional equipment: toolbox, camouflage net, binocular telescope, improved guiding system, improved ventilation. Skills and perks: sixth sense for the commander, repair for the rest of the crew. Then, brothers in arms or camouflage for the entire crew.

The Leopard 1 has no armoring that would, in any way, protect it against the tanks it encounters. The only thing is that shells aimed at the cannon armor may ricochet sporadically. The ammo compartment is at the front side of the hull! Several quick direct hits into the front of the Leopard 1 should blow the vehicle up.
